Barb,

Well, here I am at Ground Zero on Hurricane Katrina. Right where all these volunteers want to be.

Yesterday was very interesting from a sociological/psychological angle. Some volunteers were way too anxious to get to the scene. My partner, Bob Shedden and I, have developed this 'go with the flow' attitude and it has served us well.

You would have loved this one woman. From the moment we got off the plane she told everyone she had a 'pre-school' all packed in her bags. She was bound and determined to be running a shelter. She was still at the staging center in Montgomery, AL when we left at 4. The point, don't have predetermined plans, go where the organization needs you.

We arrived at the local staging headquarters in Gulfport, MS last evening around 10. Always plenty to eat and drink.

Nice people, all on a mission to help. Started to see the damage even though it was dark. Small groups of people camping in parking lots including press, etc. All gas stations are guarded by military police 24/7. Police had a good presence. Feel safe.

We slept in the back of the truck last night. I fell asleep around 11:30. Radio was great. Really relaxed me. I knew that would be good. I'm glad we decided not to go to the staff shelter. More private, nice weather, no people snoring.

Awoke around 4 and needed to pee, just like home.

I've been inside HQ emailing and searching the net for info. Found this laptop available.

Folks are beginning to get up.

Today we'll be loading up supplies for distribution in this mass feeding effort.

This area was really hit hard, approx. 250,000 people live in the immediate area.

We'll see what today brings.

Miss you. Love you.

Bob
